Inmate early release or as it is more commonly referred to as, parole, is where a person in prison may be allowed to return to society with limited supervision. A prisoner goes before a parole board, where they decide whether or not to release the prisoner back into society. The parole board takes into account the nature of the crimes that landed them in prison, their behavior while in prison, the ties they have outside of prison, and by talking with the prisoner and deciding if they are mentally prepared for life outside of prison. Early release is decided on a case-by-case basis and is a system that has benefited both the prisoners and the state.
Parole is a controversial issue because of the idea that people that are harmful to others are allowed back on the street to do no good. Parole is broken down into two groups discretionary release and mandatory release (Alarid, 54).
