Is Animal Testing Ethical or Unethical?
Animal research is essential to tackling major 21st century health problems, such as cancer and heart disease. Millions of animals are used every year for medical and commercial testing. These animals are used to develop medical treatments, check the safety of products proposed for human use, and other health care uses. There is no doubt that many animals suffer in the name of science. Animals are used in experiments that may cause physical pain and emotional distress. Such animals may be exposed to surgeries, poisoned, burned, drug overdosed, or manipulated in a way that causes harm. Even though animal testing is unhuman and cruel, it is necessary because it contributed to many life-saving medicines …show more content…
Animals are locked in closets against their will and with the possibility of staying there for the rest of their lives. The animals that are used the most for experiments are mice, hamsters, cats, dogs, and primates. These animals suffer brutally in the name of science and cannot do anything about it. Creatures used in experiments are exposed to force inhalation, force feeding, surgeries, transplantations, and physical pain. The beasts are exposed to very painful experiments and then may be just put back into the closet without receiving any painkillers. “A 2011 report by ECHA, showed that tens of thousands of animals were used in tests that could have potentially been avoided”, according to The Chemical Engineer. Thousands of animals die for nothing because the experiments go wrong and the experimenters won’t even use the item. Other animals are infected with diseases, are intentionally blinded, and their skulls are cut open and wires are implanted in their brains. Animal testing is so cruel that the animals used for experiments usually remain traumatized and get scared when people walk by. While trying to find out the best remedy for humans, experimenters test different types of vaccines and antibiotics on the animals to see which one is the best. “Each year millions of nonhuman animals suffer in biomedical experiments” (Peggs).
