Jackie Robinson shattered the race barrier when he became the first black athlete to play Major League Baseball in 1947. Despite the harsh criticism and harassment he received from those that believe sports should remain segregated, Robinson went on to become the National League MVP in 1949 and World Series Champ in 1955. Apart from baseball, Robinson became a social activist, serving on the board of the NAACP and established the Freedom Bank which was African American owned and controlled. Without his efforts, sports may still be segregated and corporations and institutions may still be dominated by an old white man. Viewing his life, teenagers, like myself, are encouraged to stand up for what is right and learn to never allow someone to dictate our life. My obstacles may seem small to outsiders but giant in my squinty, brown eyes. Growing up, and still, I have been the alien that sticks out as the elephant in the room. Wherever I go, whatever I do, in the low diversified city of Richmond, I am usually the only Chinese person. The only time I see others like myself, I have to go out of the city or go to the local college, and even then I feel isolated. As a six year-old looking out into the baseball field of the local recreation center, I noticed that the tee-ball team was filled with little, black boys. I didn’t let that phase me.
