Jackie Robinson “Sometimes there were only two meals a day, and some days we wouldn’t have eaten if it hadn’t been for the leftovers my mother was able to bring home from her job.”– Jackie Robinson Coming from humble beginnings, Jackie Robinson rose to become one of the most influential baseball players in the history of the game. Robinson had a troubled childhood, dealing with racism on a daily basis. Jackie gained an interest in sports in middle and high school, playing a total of four sports. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Later years found Robinson playing baseball for his first team, the Kansas City Monarchs. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 1st, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia to Jerry and Mallie Robinson. Robinson’s father was a sharecropper and left the young family of six under the pretense of visiting a relative, while he ran off with another woman. Mallie worked hard to provide for her family, eventually moving in with her brother for a short while. The cramped living space began to get to the family, and Mallie worked hard to finally save up enough money to move to Pasadena, CA, finding work ironing and housekeeping. Robinson signed a contract with Branch, assigning him to the Montreal Royals. He continued on to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier on April 15, 1947 by signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He faced racism from fans, players, and even his own teammates. The fans would throw things at him, and the pitchers would try to hit him with the ball. Robinson always tried to keep a level head and not let any of it get to him. He even faced death threats from many fans, and many other players. Jackie eventually retired in 1956 due to his declining
