America is a country were anyone could rise up from nothing to anything you could dream of. Jim Jones is a man who grew up with a mom who was rarely around and a father who had very little interest in him. But that did not stop Jim Jones to stop. One of his neighbors would take him to church and at the age of ten he began his own religious quest. Jones was an observant child; he began to preach what he has learned from different houses of worship. Jones was a great public speaker but due to his religious zeal caused him to have very few friends. Due his parents split he moved to Richmond, Indiana, causing him to work at a hospital as an orderly where he meets his future wife. In 1952 Jones entered the Ministry and got a job as a Somerset Methodist Church, which is mainly a white neighborhood. The following year Jones had started earning himself a reputation as a healer and missionary but due to his interest in a integrated sermon he had to leave his church because they did not share the same views as him. …show more content…
To grow his followers he brought time at local radio station to air his sermon. By the mid 1960s Jones had more than 100 members that moved to a small remote area in California. Jones has been winning over more followers with the promise of a better life. While many people were surrendering themselves to him they also gave up their belongings that benefited Jones. His sermons discouraged fornication and romantic relationships. But Jones did not follow his sermons and had several relationships with Carolyn Layton and actually had a child together. Later on Jim Jones then claimed to be the father for Grace Stoen’s son. After some time had passed on this scandal Jones bought some in Guyana for a new home base for his followers and him.
