John Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher Known as the “Father of Liberalism” and recognized as the founder of British empiricism. He was influenced by Thomas Hobbes, Rene Descartes, Aristotle, Plato, and some more. His most important contributions to education were An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Tabula Rasa. Locke differed with Plato’s idea that humans are born with innate ideas, Locke believed that human mind begins as a “tabula rasa”
Tabula Rasa (blank state) is a theory that affirms that humans are born with an empty mind and they acquire ideas and knowledge by experiences through life. In Section 150 of the book, Locke wrote, "Contrivances might be made to teach children to read, whilst they thought they were only playing." He meant that children are able to get reading skills by playing with the appropriate material according to their age. Children love to play by nature and they play, as it is their only duty. I believe that this innovation have had a greatest impact on education because children should not carry with the parents responsibilities. They should be educated at school age. It also prevented ignorance or struggles to educate those children when they were in adult age. Second innovation that I believed have had a greatest impact on the community is the community service. It is important to cover the needs of a community. Through community service centers people received food, health and recreational services, English literacy classes, and training for carriers in social work.
