Native American Pleiades of The Past There are many legends about The Pleiades among the Native Tribes. The Kiowa Tribe calls the Pleiades the Mateo Tepe. The legend is that seven maidens were camped by the river with a lot of bears around. One day a bear started chasing the maidens, the knelt down to pray to the gods for help and the ground was raised towards the sky. The bear was trying to follow the maidens and this is why scratched marks are on the tower. To protect the maidens the Great Spirit allowed them to remain in the sky as the seven sisters of the Pleiades. This is the legend of the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. They were camping by the Beautiful Lake and the game and fish were plentiful there. The leader thanked the Great Spirit for their safety and for the plentiful wildlife. But when winter came the eight children got restless and got tired of doing daily chores for the parents. The children found a quiet place away from the village. They went by the lake and danced. Each day they would meet and dance for hours. They would get hungry and dizzy but they still would keep on dancing. One day while they were dancing an old man appeared before them he was covered from head to toe with brilliant white feathers. His hair was very long and white. He warned the children to stop dancing or something bad would happen. He came and warned them every day, but the children didn’t want to listen and they kept on dancing. The children called him Bright Shining Old Man. One day the children tried to take food along with them, but their parents would not let them, telling them they had to eat at home. They kept going out each day and dancing until they got lightheaded and slowly they began to rise in the air. One of the children hollered out, don’t look down, we are dancing in the air. Bright Shining Old Man looked up at the children and shook his head. He watched them go higher and higher in the sky.
