“ The Oldest and Strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”. This quote said by H.P. Lovecraft explains the emotion of fear and what exactly an individual is afraid of. It has been said that how one copes with this fear defines one as a person. From the three summer reading books presented this summer, each had their own main character and set of fears they had to go through throughout the story line. The main characters in the novels were presented with situations that triggered fear, and were left to cope with them throughout novel. In the novel Left for Dead by Pete Nelson, fear was presented to the survivors of the USS Indianapolis as a it sank, each coping with the fear …show more content…
“ He felt sweat breaking out all over him. His knees began to shake. His forehead throbbed. He held up his hand and was unable to see it in front of his face. Abort abort abort abort”(Nelson 46). This quote shows the fear Sheerin was facing as he was put through the tunnel. “There’s always the abort switch though. But suppose it doesn’t work? What if I press it and the lights don’t come on. I could test it, I suppose. Just to see- Fatty is a coward! Fatty is a coward!” ( Nelson 46). This quote shows that Sheerin thought about what people would think of him If he were to succumb to the fear and abort the ride. That is what helped him cope with the fear presented to him. In the novel The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart, Merlin, the protagonist, fears the unknown in the beginning of the novel. From the start, he feared Camlach for he attempted to poison him by feeding him a spiked fruit. After this incident, he went to Galapas who taught him to use the art of seeing the near future. From learning this magic, he is able to neutralize his emotion of fear. This is because the magic taught to him removes the aspect of his future being unknown. Merlin has an insight as to what will happen to him in the future, therefore giving him a way to deal with the fear that comes …show more content…
Some of the ways individuals can deal with fear is to hope an event will happen in their favor. An event that neutralizes fear itself. Such as the survivor in Left for Dead that hoped that the next day is when he would be rescued. Another way individuals deal with fear is to protect their reputation or how they look to other people. For example in Nightfall, Sheerin didn’t want to succumb to the fear that was consuming him on board the tunnel ride because at the same time he feared what other people would think of him. This also helped him deal with the fear presented to him. In Crystal Cave, Merlin deals with fear by seeing the future.
