The letter was written by Galileo Galilei in 1615. Galileo Galilei was an Italian; he was a scientist that started finding out new discoveries in the heavens in the 1609. He discovered many things that did not coincide with the teachings of the church. Galileo wrote a letter to the Grand Duchess Christina of Tuscany when he heard that the grand duchess Christina criticized a theory that Copernicus had created which was the heliocentric theory. Copernicus created this theory, in order, to shed light on different perspective on theories that already existed involving the universe. Copernicus wished for people to be interested in making new discoveries regarding science and also finding the truth. Galileo wrote the letter firing back at such criticism.

This conflict has to do with the questioning of the authority of science(astronomy), related to the authority of the Church. This letter has some major points that defend Copernicus theory and Galileo’s discoveries. The Copernicus theory was invented by Copernicus and not Galileo. Galileo “has no greater connection to Copernicus than the endorsement of his doctrine”. Galileo in this letter doesn’t make mention of if this theory was actually believed in by Copernicus.
