The narrator of this story is embarrassed by his brother. He goes through extreme lengths to change him and it does not end in his favor. The theme that a person’s actions can change another person is revealed through the element of character. The narrator wants to change his brother Doodle out of his own pride and embarrassment of him. The narrator’s brother was originally named William, not Doodle. Doodle’s brother decides to rename him because “no one expects much from someone called Doodle”
