Loyalty is an “instinct to sociability.” It means being committed, supported, and honest. To have faithfulness to something to which one is bound by a pledge or duty, is loyalty. Loyalty is an act solely based on constant support or allegiance to a person. The word loyalty originated from the Old French word loyal. Loial means to be “legal” if someone is loyal to you because the law requires him to be.

Loyalty is used in many ways in The Crucible. The Puritans were the people who lived in Salem. They were loyal to their religion by going to church on Sundays, praying before bed, and accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior. In The Crucible, the Puritans would question those who were accused of witchcraft by seeing if they could recite the Ten Commandments. In the play,

In Act IV John says, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies!” Loyalty is used in many other movies, plays, and stories. Old Yeller was written by Fred Gipson in 1956. Old Yeller is about a teenage boy who grows to love a stray yellow dog while he was helping his mom and brother while his dad was away. The main idea of Old Yeller is to grow up. The young boy, Travis, learns to become a man is to accept the harshness of life that is beyond one's control. This means that he must support his family, and do his duty at home without being chased around by his mother. The dog, Old Yeller, stayed loyal to the family. He was a faithful protector that continually puts himself in danger in order to save Travis and the other family members from harm. Travis stayed loyal to Old Yeller by accepting that he had gotten rabies. He then makes a tough decision to shoot Old Yeller to put him out of his misery. In conclusion, loyalty
