Imagine fighting a battle that puts the fate of the world on the line. This is what Andrew “Ender” Wiggin faced in Orson Scott Card's Ender’s Game. The book is centered around a dystopian future where earth was nearly wiped out by “buggers”. Ender, the main character, is recruited by the International Fleet to train to be a commander. The IF’s goal is for Ender to fend off the buggers and wipe out their civilization. The movie we watched was an adequate representation of the plot; however, the book served as a better portrayal of Card’s story.
One of the most important elements of the story is manipulation. Ender is constantly manipulated by people he knows. For example, Ender is constantly manipulated by Colonel Graff. After boarding the ship that takes everyone to Battle School, Colonel Graff continuously compliments Ender, which results in hostility from the other kids toward Ender. Colonel Graff believes that pitting the other kids against Ender will allow him to function in isolation. This is the start of Ender’s manipulation at the Battle School. Colonel Graff also manipulates Ender in the sense that Ender’s final battle is actually the real battle against the buggers. The adults of the IF use Ender to get what they want. In both the movie and the book, Ender’s brother Peter is a vicious killer who constantly affects Ender’s psyche. Peter is always getting into Ender’s mind, whether it is through a game at Battle School or a fight against a bully. Another similarity between the book and the movie is the fact that Ender makes and keeps his promise to the buggers. After wiping out the bugger civilization and finding the pupa of the queen, Ender promises to travel the planets and find a home for the new civilization.
