There are times in history when a family unit works together and times when it doesn’t. There have also been times when communities have community’s have been successful. American history, literature and film has shown that when a community works together as a family to support one another, they create a strong family unit allowing for success witch is an American characteristic.

History has shown that when the United States of America works together and supports one another they create a strong family unit that creates success. Mark Twain wrote about growing up wanting to be a pilot his whole life. Through role models such as Mr. Bixby, Twains motivation kept growing and growing. “When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboat man.” (Twain). This quote shows how twain was always motivated to become a steamboat pilot. Motivation is an important part of having a successful community and family. With out motivation it would be hard to find reasons to be supportive to your family and peers. As Mark Twain never mentions his family, its clear that he thinks of the piloting community as a family. Mr. Bixby was an important role model in Twains life because he was hi first instructor and Mark Twain wanted to live up to Mr. Bixby. This proved as great motivation for Mr. Twain allowing him to reach his full potential giving him great success. With out motivation a family is not a family. The family needs to be motivated to work hard for each other and help prove the American dream witch represents American characteristics, having the opportunity for success by hard work and motivation.
