Life on the Mississippi tells of the travels of Mark Twain as a steamboat captain and how he went from seeing the river as beautiful and majestic to all of those feelings fading away. The more time he spent on the river, the faster the feelings started to fade. It got to the the point where all the romance and beauty he saw in the river had finally disappeared. In the first paragraph Twain describes the river as a book that could only be understood and appreciated by one who knows and loves the river.
