Martha Washington was born June 13, 1731. In New Kent County, Virginia,VA. Her father’s name was John Dandridge and her mother’s maiden name was Frances Jones, her married name was Dandridge. Martha Washington did not attend school, however many different tutors taught her to read and write.

Martha had eight siblings, Bartholome, William, Elizabeth, Ralph, Anna Maria, Ann, Mary, and John. She lived in a two story frame house on Pamunkey River. Martha Washington married shortly, to Daniel Parke Custis on May 15, 1750. Together they had four children, John Parke Custis, Frances Custis, Daniel Parke Custis Jr., and Martha Parke Custis. They were only married for 7 years because Daniel Parke Custis had died. So she then had to raise all of her children on her own. Two years after Daniel Parke Custis died Martha married George Washington on January 6, 1759. Martha and George washington were married for forty years. Then sadly George died.

Instead of staying home in the winter she decided to follow her husband into the battlefield to help the soldiers with all of their needs. Martha died on May 22, 1802 on top of a mountain, of a very severe fever. She was buried at Mount Vernon, which was her plantation home.

I would have loved to meet her if she was still alive because I would want to listen to her stories about how it was like in Valley Forge. I agree with all of her actions and ideas because she always did the right thing. The most interesting thing that I learned about Martha Washington after doing all of this research was that about a year after George Washington’s death she freed all of his slaves. The most surprising thing that I learned about her was that she did not attend school even though her parents had a lot of money. The most important thing about her was that she helped a lot of
