One of the more interesting stories in this week’s reading was "No Name Woman" by Maxine Hong Kingston. By reading this story one forms an idea of how beliefs in China differ greatly from those that were practiced in America. The narrator speaks of a story her mother told her of her renounced aunt’s horrible fate. She tells this sad story for two reasons. One is to warn her daughter of the strict punishments that are imposed when a lady ruins her family name by straying from the standards set for her. However, the second could be because she felt guilt for continuing to uphold an oppressive tradition.
Each civilization has their set of standards and beliefs that they understand to be the correct lifestyle for their present and future generations.
