You may think castle's defences are primitive, but actually the techknowledgey back then was pretty amazing, from murder holes and arrow loops built into a castle to defend against enemies, trebuchets and catapults and to know how to defend against one. But most commonly was siege warfare. All of these factors needed to be taken into consideration when building a castle.
When building castles, everything had a purpose. Even the spiral direction of drum tower. One defence castles had at their disposal was murder holes. Murder holes were built around a castles main entrance and in Gatehouse passages. However there `1was a need to protect a castles walls and towers also and earlier designs of castle did not give a good enough defence system,

Siege Engines were the heavy artillery of the Middle AgesThese massive Medieval Catapults were an invaluable Medieval siege attack weapons. Any machine that can throw an object can be a catapult, but the term is generally understood to mean the medieval weapon. The designs of many Medieval Catapults worked similar to a seesaw movement. One example of a siege weapon is the Ballista. The Ballista design was similar to a giant crossbow and worked by using tension. the ballista design was based on a dart-throwing machine. The Ballista loosed heavy bolts, darts and spears along a flat angle. The force of the darts launched from the Ballista was engineered to have great penetration and were capable of killing several of the enemy at one time! One of the Medieval siege weapons used during the Medieval times was the Trebuchet. Medieval engineers worked hard on the design of the Trebuchet to ensure that this siege weapon and the aim of this type of catapult, would have the best effect.
