In Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", we can identify many characters as foils. Foils are characters who contrast with another character in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character. Two characters that have very different characteristics are Romeo and Mercutio. Since the beginning of the literary work, the two characters act in the opposite way, even the two are close friends. First of all, when the readers first met Romeo, everyone has the impression that he is a hopeless romantic and a boy who fall in love quickly. For example, just before the party at the Capulets, Romeo tells his friends had a dream related to love and he uses expressions of a passionate boy as "Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, …show more content…
For example, at the beginning of the book, Romeo says he will never work with Rosaline. Also, Romeo says to Benvolio that the Capulet party would not end well "I have a feeling this party tonight will be the start of something bad, something que will end in my own death." On the contrary, Mercutio was always optimistic. For example, when Romeo was suffering because Rosaline not loved him , he said to him go after other women to enjoy life. And finally, Mercutio was always very sarcastic, joking with anything. For example when he said this to Benvolio “... wish his mistress were one of those fruits that like female genitalia.'’ While Romeo was super serious, I never did play with anyone and not like they did play with him. For example, Benvolio knew Romeo was very serious, so when Mercutio made jokes about him, he said "If Romeo hears you, you will make him angry," As you can see, the two characters can be considered foils because they contrast with another character in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character. That is, both have many different features such as; While Romeo is romantic, serious and pessimistic, Mercutio makes jokes about love, is sarcastic and optimistic.
