Modern Women In The Odyssey

In Homer’s The Odyssey and The Iliad, women play a somewhat large role in the way that the men behave and make decisions. The women in these stories are a good representation of ancient Greece’s women and how they were treated or how they acted in certain situations. Also, those ancient women can be compared to modern women in the way they are treated by the opposite sex as inferior in many situations. However, it contrasts in the way that modern women are gaining power and probably are not as oppressed in most countries such as the United States.
Though men are mostly seen as superior and strong, women are often shown as influencing counterparts. This is seen in The Odyssey with Penelope being extremely faithful to her husband despite believing

For the most part, women are seen as inferior and emotional, which is similar to how the women in Homer’s stories and ancient Greece were. This is often why women find it hard to get the same jobs men can or have the same opportunities. Men think that because women show emotions and get passionate about issues they care about, they are not as fit to run things. However, in a lot of countries women are gaining confidence and learning that they can have power if they strive for it. Maybe women in countries such as the United States and other first world countries are beginning to reach out toward higher positions, and there are even women nominated as possible presidential candidates. This is much different than the opportunities that women in ancient Greece had, only being used by men as someone to have children and take care of the house. To go back to comparisons, the goddesses such as Athena could be compared to the intelligent women of the modern world. Athena was very quick witted and held a lot of power over what happened to the heroes, and that could show how women can be very powerful and
