Throughout history, contemporary authors have drawn from the Greek legends to help form their own stories. The common themes and morals within them are used throughout our society today, being applied in the modern arts. The movie “O’ Brother Where Art Thou” is one production that follows this theme, drawing many characters and themes from The Odyssey, by Homer.
The movie introduces Penny, Everett’s wife. Penny’s name has been heavily inspired by the Odyssey, while Penelope is the name of Odysseus’ wife. Everett dresses as a beggar to see Penny while Odysseus returns to Ithaca dressed as a beggar to meet Penelope. 960 Odysseus kills all the suitors to meet Penelope. Similar to the competition with the suitors, while Penny was getting married, Everett tries to persuade Penny to be with him during the store and leave her new husband. From this comparison, greed for lust turns people to do anything for women to the point of killing each other.

George Nelson resembles Hermes because he’s a thief. In the movie, George Nelson shoots a bunch of cows while driving, which shows a significant resemblance from The Odyssey wherein 937(Homer) Odysseus’ crew killed Helios’ cows. 937 As a result, Odysseus’ men were all killed by Zeus, leaving him all alone. Meanwhile, George Nelson was sentenced to death by an electric chair while Zeus killed Odysseus’s men in The Odyssey. A line from the song called, “Man of Constant Sorrow”, describes a similar situation to the movie and Odysseus himself: “I have no friends help me now”.
