Both applicants had uninterrupted work experiences and a strong educational and professional background. Observers monitored whether or not candidates would receive a callback from potential employers by phone or email. Real employers do discriminate against mothers. Childless women received 2.1 times as many callbacks than the qualified mothers. The motherhood penalty is significant and negative. Similar to the laboratory experiment, these finding impact the wage gap because in the real world, mothers are discriminated even when they have the same qualifications
