Western warfare derived from a series of individual practices or aspects that when combined created a system, known as the Western way of war. This system has five crucial aspects; technology, discipline, and an aggressive military tradition, supported by capital, will set the conditions to respond swiftly to challenges. Formulaic in its structure, one can surmise that if the parts are not working in conjunction, the ability to wage warfare that is of this type is categorically not Western.
Riding the fervor of nationalism, produced by the outcomes of the French Revolution, Napoleon brought these aspects to bear. In this essay I will examine how the aspects of a highly aggressive military tradition coupled with superior discipline best characterize the ways Napoleon used to rapidly achieve his endstate: the total destruction of the enemy.
First, I will identify how an aggressive military tradition was in stark contrast to many of his contemporaries and why his methods enabled victory. What made Napoleon unique and Western amongst his contemporaries was the motivation of honor. Always seeking an advantage, in the pursuit of the total destruction and defeat of the enemy, Napoleon presented “pieces of ribbon” and golden eagles to honor individual Soldiers and regiments who fought with aggression, courage, and bravery. He roused his Soldiers to victory during the battle of Borodino on 7 September 1812 stating: “Soldiers! Here is the battle you have so long desired!
