“You did it. You helped make a difference,” were the words I heard when I felt my perspective on life change. Standing in the hallway of my high school, holding a crisp check of $2,000 for the American Heart Association, I realized I did not need to be a superhero in order to positively affect someone’s life. When I became the president of my National Honor Society(NHS) chapter, I set out to make a difference within my high school. In years past, the NHS chapter at my school was not extremely active and I set out to reinvent the chapter. With the small size of my high school, it is not surprising past leaders were unable to achieve many accomplishments. This class changed my perspective on a multitude of things. Within this class, we learned a lot of the topic of the disparities people were facing throughout the country – especially within the context of Latino health. I was astonished to learn of all of the disparities people were facing throughout the country, especially within the context of health care. Mobile Clinic is a University of Iowa student run clinic that is determined to help those who cannot afford health care by providing a free clinic in locations where there is a high percentage of people who cannot afford health care for themselves. When I began volunteering with Mobile Clinic during my first semester at the University of Iowa, I was amazed at all of the people Mobile Clinic is able to help throughout many different communities surrounding the Iowa City area. When board positions became available for the clinic, I decided to apply and honorably was offered the position of the Broadway Co-coordinator. Within my position, I am able to plan clinics at the Broadway location within Iowa City to directly assist the diverse areas within the surrounding areas to receive better health care. It has been an honor to be able to act to make health care available to those who typically cannot afford it.
While working with Mobile Clinic as a clinic coordinator, it has shown me how much of a passion I have for helping those less fortunate. This has brought me to the realization that I want to be able to continue working towards dividing disparities when I do become a practicing physician. Whether this be spending some years working within a rural area, or continuing my work with mobile clinic as a volunteer physician. When
