Although civil rights activists have paved the way for a better society, the exceptions to these cases can damage the causes they are trying to impact. When peaceful protests become violent or are generalized with other groups involved in similar causes, chaos often results. The media and public perception greatly influence the impact civil disobedience can have, especially when published stories seem to consistently cover the negative aspects of issues. It is important to analyze protest events, and take note of their effects before making the assumption that all free speech has led to betterment of the United States. The first amendment supports the general principal that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble” (Corwin, 1920). This aspect of American government separates it from other countries, but it has led to acts of protests that have reached certain extremes.
