In the film Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sound to show different themes to the audience. For instance, when Edward was being interviewed on TV he was asked about his love life; the music changed to romantic and he just stared at the camera, almost like he was looking directly at Kim. This gave her, and the audience, the idea that Edward liked Kim. Another example of a use of non-diegetic sound is when Edward was cutting the ice sculpture and accidentally cut Kim’s hand. The music changed from light and happy when Kim was dancing in the snow, to dark and sinister when Edward cut her hand and Tim starts to yell at him.
