In the lyric poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost, it describes the gorgeousness of nature in the morning sun by saying it was comparable to gold or a flower, and explains how it is saddening that it would go away when it nears day. Although the poem explains how nature is incomparably beautiful in the morning and sadly disappears closer to the day, he is able to illustrate the underlying meaning that everything, even the good things, must come to an end through the use of metaphors and symbolism. Frost describes the underlying meaning of the poem through the use of literary elements such as metaphors. In the poem it expresses that, “Nothing gold can stay.” This symbolizes that good things and precious things must go and come to an end. It also states, “leaf subsides to leaf, So Eden sank to grief.” This is symbolizing how the beautiful leaves, when they begin to recede, is very saddening and depressing that even the Garden of Eden, a garden filled with all the plants and animals, would to grieve for. Both of these quotes symbolizes how beautiful things must come to an end and can be very sad which exemplifies the underlying meaning that everything must always end. Through the use of metaphors and symbolism, Frost is able to interpret the underlying meaning that everything anything, even the good and bad things in life, must constantly come to an end. This is seen throughout the whole poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” when the speaker is explaining how beautiful nature is in the morning light and that it is equivalent to a flower and gold but disappears very quickly.
