A. Star Topology: In the star topology, there is one controller of the network to which the communication is established. This prime controller of the network is called the coordinator. The PAN coordinator may be mains powered as it should be installed permanently and always should be alive, while the rest devices or nodes will most likely battery powered due to its portable in nature. Applications that follow this topology include home automation, small office automation, personal computer (PC) peripherals controlling, operation of toys and games. After an FFD is activated for the first time, it may initialize other devices to establish its own wireless network and become the PAN coordinator which will eventually maintain the overall network. Each star network chooses its PAN identifier, which is not currently used by any other network. This allows each star network to operate independently and without interference of other network.

Peer-to-peer Topology: Peer-to-peer topology has also single PAN coordinator to which overall network depends. In contrast to the star topology, here any node can communicate with any other node as long as they are in the same range and comply with same protocol. A peer-to-peer network can be ad hoc, self-forming and self-healing in nature. Applications such as industrial control and monitoring, wireless sensor networks, asset tracking and inventory monitoring would follow such a topology. It also defines route for messages in multi-hop fashion that is from any node to any other node in the same network. It can provide reliability by multipath routing and thus comply with self-healing architecture. Figure 2.1 shows three types of topologies that ZigBee supports: star topology, peer-to-peer topology and cluster
