O Brother Where Art Thou? was a movie released in 2000, directed by Ethan and Joel Coen. Although the film was not originally supposed to be based on The Odyssey, Joel Coen has said, “It just sort of occurred to us after we’d gotten into it somewhat that it was a story about someone going home, and sort of episodic in nature and it kind of evolved into that.” Even though the story of the film is not very similar to The Odyssey, there are many parts that have largely derived from it. One good example of the relation of these two great works is found in Big Dan Teague, who parallels Polyphemus. They both lure in the main character(s) with food, even though Polyphemus did so unintentionally. After luring them in with food, they both beat up the crew and while the cyclops eats the crew members, Big Dan “kills” Pete, who they thought had been turned into a frog. During their attempt, they dress as flag bearers and their plan almost works perfectly, until Big Dan takes off his mask to recognize Everett and Delmar from their previous encounter. He slowly walks up to them, in an attempt to show who they really are and have them killed too. He rips off their masks and they are forced to run away with Tommy for fear of being killed, just as Odysseus and the crew members run and try to hide from the cyclops in order to keep from being eaten. When they get behind the flaming cross, Everett throws the flag in the air at Big Dan Teague. He catches it, because the Confederate flag was not supposed to hit the ground, but then Everett cuts the wire that holds the cross in place, and it falls down, appearing to drive the sharpened stake of the flag into Dan’s only good eye, like the flaming spear that was driven into Polyphemus’ eye, thus completing his parallels to the Cyclops
