Oklahoma State University is easily one of the most recognizable colleges in southern Oklahoma. Identifiable by its black and referred to as "The Brightest Orange" colors it's difficult to miss. OSU was established in 1890 and is currently located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Often the 23,459 students, as reported in 2012, are referred to as Cowboys or Cowgirls. OSU's Veterinary Center Ph.D. program ranks in the top 50 percent of the U.S. In fact, OSU is home to the first Ph.D. program in Unmanned Aerial Systems and was the first major American university to offer an executive Ph.D. in business. Beginning from a land grant at the request of Governor George Steele, and eventually passed on Christmas Eve in 1890, it was called the Morrill Act. The college faced many difficulties before finally establishing its first permanent building on June 15, 1894, and named "Old Central." During the time of Oklahoma Territory, the university achieved little progress due to money issues, ineptness, and treason. Then, in 1909 to 1944, they started accomplishing more, eventually creating a separate Board of Regents in July 1944. Two presidents strengthened the school through multiple ideas like the Point Four Program, which extended the land-grant college idea overseas, and brought modernity to the college. During Oliver Siralvo Willam's term, he changed the name of the institute and established and/or strengthened satellites campuses in Okmulgee and Oklahoma City. The program originally was two associations, the South Western Association, a membership made up of equipment dealers from five states including Oklahoma, and the Canada West Equipment Dealers Association, which serves 400 dealers in four provinces. South Western Association saw a growing need for more skilled technicians in their dealerships and realized that merging would meet these demands. These two associations realized they shared a common goal, understanding the importance of educating and training the future workforce. They eventually merged to form OSUIT. The program started more than ten years ago and continues to grow as the demand for service technicians has increased in conjunction with the advancement of equipment and technology in the farm and industrial equipment industry. OSU Institute of Technology offers the leading industrial and farm equipment degree program sponsored by the Western Equipment Dealers Association.
