In the play, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” the theme is overcoming obstacles, and the theme in “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote” is also overcoming obstacles. In the “Watson’s Go to Birmingham” the theme of overcoming obstacles is shown by having blacks and whites have separate drinking fountains, separate neighborhoods, and even separate restaurants. However in the passage “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote” Susan B Anthony shows the theme overcoming obstacles by getting the right to vote for women and herself by fighting for what she believes in. Both the play and the passage share the same theme, but they have their differences. For example, in “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote” the character’s attitude is very serious because she wants to get women the right to vote. In the play “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” the character’s attitude is more scared because the kids are not used to the way things are done in Birmingham, which was treating people with segregation.

Evidence that shows the theme is overcoming obstacles because Susan B Anthony said to Judge Hunt, “ My natural rights, my civil rights, my political rights, my judicial rights are all alike ignored.” This is significant because Susan B Anthony is saying, if women are not allowed to vote, then they wouldn’t be able to make their own decisions, and it would be made for them which is not just or right.
