Fact: The Pacific Ocean is full of very remote islands. From both the Americas and Asia it takes hours on a plane going hundreds of miles an hour full of technology to reach these islands. On page 25 Mental Floss discusses how the first people got to these Pacific islands from Asia. These people hollowed out tree trunks and used them as “boats”. These canoe like structures are something we use to float down a river in. Today we use these giant steel motor powered vessels to travel across oceans. These people made the 2500 mile trek relying on paddles and the current. On top of it all they used maps made of twigs, rocks and seashells to navigate the ocean. This simply blows my mind. Comparing are struggle to navigate even with modern technology puts into perspective just how incredible of a feat it was for these ancient people to navigate these long distances over the Pacific Ocean.
Question: Food is a driving force in today’s world. With the Earth’s population as large as it is, it is an absolute must to be able to produce food and a lot of it. One could even say our society’s love of food goes a little too far with the obesity epidemic. This obsession with food however, did not start in our generation.
