“I’m still so worried about my parents. What in the world am I going to tell my mom to keep her from going crazy again?”
Dan, sitting across the aisle from Joan, calmly responded “We’ll figure it out later, we’ll be landing in Albuquerque soon and I’m going to take this time to catch up on some sleep. We have a while to drive once we land, we can figure it out then.”
Without a single word, Dan, seemingly instantaneously laid back, and drifted off to sleep. Joan’s brain was running on overdrive. She still wasn’t sure what had happened in Las Cruces, but she didn’t plan on stopping to figure it out. She found her brother dead on a sidewalk, her boyfriend had come back from the dead, and worse, she had been bombarded with all the terrible things

Dan’s father,Mr. Cotwell, was at the airport to pick them both up. He was a strong tough man. Joan had never seen him cry, but when he saw Dan he looked as though he was about to burst into tears. You’ll never see a man happier than Mr. Cotwell was at that moment. The three of them got into the car, Dan, telling his father as much as he could about what happened, looked as though he’d never fit in the small station wagon, but somehow he managed to squeeze his way in. The three continued telling Mr. Cotwell about the events that happened most of the way home.
“I still need to think of what to tell my parents. My mother would lose it if she heard anything close to the truth, and my dad would blame himself for not raising him better.” Joan was frantically going through every story she could think of in her mind.
“I would tell them the truth Joan,”Mr. Cotwell began saying in a father-like tone.”It might hurt them, but it’s always better to tell the truth, and in this situation, there aren’t many other options. They’ll heal with time, just as they did before, but they need to know the truth. Your father is strong, and im sure he will get over it fairly
