This I Believe

University of Maryland, University College This I Believe Growing up, I did not come from the perfect environment or home. I grew up in a single-parent home, my father did not have a high school diploma, and I do not remember him being around after the age of five. I remember long days of waking up early in the morning, being taken to school by my mother, being picked up by the baby-sitter, then taken to my grandmother’s home in the inner-city. Once I arrived to my grandmother’s house, she assisted me with my homework, we ate dinner, and we started to get ready for bed. Afterwards, I was woken around 11 p.m. to go home and go back to sleep only to do it all over again the next day. On the weekends, my mother slept from the exhausting week, and I did my best to “survive”. I did this routine for the first 10 years of my life. Through it all, I still received excellent grades in school, I developed an amazing work ethic and this is why I believe that I am not a statistic, but I am a conqueror.

I did not suffer from mental illness or substance abuse, instead I found strength in school accomplishments and making my family proud. I consistently achieved honor roll status and received perfect attendance awards. Even in high school, I participated in the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club. Through FBLA, I’ve entered many competitions, and I’ve won many awards. I’ve even travelled out of state to participate in competitions. After graduating in the top 10 percent of my class, I went on to college, where I successfully sat on the Dean’s List for many semesters, and received a large scholarship to offset the cost of my
