Immigration, whether legal or illegal, has been one of the hot button issues of the last several years. Presidential candidates in this current cycle, such as Donald Trump, have argued for harsher border controls, prioritizing American workers over foreign labor, and deportation for many of the several million illegal immigrants. Others, such as Bernie Sanders, are proponents of legalizing all of the undocumented workers, expanding the DREAM act, and revamping trade acts such as NAFTA.
With a Republican Senate and a Democratic President, change in the immigration status quo is unlikely until one of the parties takes complete control over the government. This leaves many millions of illegal immigrants uncertain of their status and place amongst American society. Many are forced into low paying jobs whose employers skirt the law by hiring them or they choose crime and other illicit ways of paying the rent.
