Polar Bears What is a Polar Bear? Sizable mammals colonizing tundra biomes, with fur adapting to colder climates are Polar bears. These mammals referred scientifically as Ursus maritimus meaning maritime bear since many consider them marine animals. The bears are carnivorous animals, with their main diet walruses, narwhals, beluga whales, and bowhead whales. With Polar Bears in the food chain remain on top, they do not have any predators except for male polar bears during competition in mating or for food. However, today polar bears are facing extinction, in May 2008 the bears demonstrate threatened species added to Endangered Species Act the food sources are diminishing.
