Law enforcement is one of the oldest professions in the United States, and police is a vital part of it. Police officers play an important role and make tremendous impacts in the lives of U.S citizens. Their primary duty is to protect people and property, they are also responsible for patrolling designated areas, enforcing laws, answering calls for help, arresting individuals suspected of committing crime … (Johnson). Americans are made to put trust in police and believe they are serving and protecting us while they are not. Police officers usually abuse their authority and start to act as if they are higher than the law. As a result of overstepping authority, police brutality has become an ongoing topic of today’s society. Police brutality is the use of excessive, unreasonable and unnecessary force by policing while dealing with suspects and offenders (Danilina). Officers who use unnecessary force physically often results in death or serious injury to citizens. There are some cases that police officer is arrested because of domestic violence. Police used to be a sign of safety, which can provide protection to individuals. However, at the present, when Americans think of police, the first thing that usually comes in mind is fear. Police are supposed to protect and serve people, but they are more likely to overuse authority and arrest as many …show more content…
