The ability to revoke a credential is non-trivial in the case of privacy-preserving credentials. The major obstacle is that the straightforward solution of a revocation list is no longer applicable, as it implies the existence of some kind of credential identifier, known to the issuer and the relying parties, which allows the relying party to test whether or not the credential being used is included in the revocation list. This will violate the requirement of unlinkability. A credential could be revoked when the user no longer possesses the attribute that is being asserted. For example, when a student graduates, the university could revoke his/her credential that certifies the student status.
