The theme of The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is that to much pride can take someone over their limit. For instance, on page 425 the narrator said “I heard Doodle, who had fallen behind, cry out, “Brother, Brother, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could” the narrator was trying to get his brother Doodle to learn how to run, he was embarrassed of having a brother who was different from everyone else and could not run at the age of 5 so he tried teaching him how to run to help his own pride. His brother knew that Doodle could not be pushed too hard but he did not care, he pushed Doodle non stop, like a racehorse. On page 422 the narrator says “It was Saturday noon, just a few days before school was to start. I should of already admitted defeat, but my pride wouldn’t let me.” he admits that his pride will not allow him to stop and accept the fact that Doodle is and will always be different than all the other kids. …show more content…
