In America, it is not challenging for a civilian to buy a gun. Some minimal laws are in place to prevent irresponsible people from obtaining firearms. This is called gun control and it is an extremely controversial subject, especially in the United States. Many people say it is their right under the Second Amendment to own firearms as a form of self-protection. People in disagreement bring up the fact that America has some of the highest rates of gun-related deaths. These people say we need to be more strict with our legislation to prevent unnecessary violence, however, the data shows that America has the most civilian-owned guns in the world. In some places around the world, you must provide a reason other than self-defense to buy a gun. These places have a much lower …show more content…
Many criminals indeed get their guns by stealing them or getting someone else to buy them, but it’s also true that these guns were originally purchased legally. This means that if they were harder to get for normal citizens, criminals would have a harder time stealing them. As shown before, other countries with fewer guns have fewer gun deaths per person, which shows that this type of gun control is working in these places. One of the ways gun control could be improved includes removing many firearms off the market and limiting the number of guns one person can own. This would mean citizens would only have access to simple handguns and rifles for hunting. The idea would be to go back and use the weapons available when the Second Amendment was written. The deadliest shootings every year are with military-style rifles. It is logical to not allow these types of weapons to be bought or sold anymore.
