Every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies has a connection to protein. Body proteins are broken down and replaced constantly. The foods that we eat that contains protein is digested into amino acids that’s used later to replace the proteins in our bodies. Food that protein is found is: Meats, poultry, fish, legumes, tofu, eggs, nuts and seeds, milk and milk products, grains, some vegetables, and some fruits. There are 20 different amino acids that join together to make all types of protein. Amino acids are like building blocks, amino acids cannot be made by our bodies, they are known as essential amino acids. The risks associated with protein deficiency are gallstones, arthritis, muscle deterioration, and heart problems. More risk associated with protein deficiency is pale skin, thinning or brittle hair, and ridges in nails, general weakness, slow healing, difficulty sleeping, headaches, and weight. The risks associated with protein overconsumption are weight gain, damage to the internal organs, nutritional deficiencies. According to my age and gender the recommended amount of protein that I need is 46 grams each day. Some healthy nutrient sources of protein are: A cup of milk, a 3-ounce piece of meat, a cup of dry beans, and an 8-ounce container of yogurt. “Protein based” diets can help you feel full longer and stabilize your blood sugar levels, but they also carry certain risks and effects.
