Are you aware that you or someone you know has most likely contributed to the two million dog deaths each year from the cruelty of puppy mills? If you have bought a puppy from a pet store or out of someone's backyard, it is most likely connected to a puppy mill in some way. A puppy mill is an inhumane, high-volume dog breeding facility that churns out puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers. Honestly, I hold a special place in my heart for dogs that are treated badly because I grew up with a dog that my family rescued from a mill. It is estimated that there are at least 10,000 of these brutal puppy mills in the United States and it truly breaks my heart to know that other dogs are living in the cruelty that mine …show more content…
The lives of the dogs on the mills are crammed into small, dirty cages until they are sold. Unfortunately, it is often that the needs of the puppies and their mothers are ignored. They suffer from malnutrition or starvation due to inadequate or unsanitary food and water (Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)). In puppy mills, mother dogs spend their entire lives in cramped cages with little to no personal attention. Puppy mills confine breeding females into cages, often with wire flooring, without any human kindness or access to socialization with other dogs (not that these dogs have any experience with what that means). They are also confined to squalid, overcrowded cages with minimal shelter from extreme weather and no choice but to sit and sleep in their own excrement. Usually once a female or male from the breeding stock no longer produces, they’re discarded like trash or killed (Martyn). To conclude, due to poor sanitation, overbreeding and a lack of humane treatment, the puppies frequently suffer from a variety of health issues.
