Qualitative Data Analysis The major purpose of qualitative data analysis is to identify the differences and commonalities given by individuals and the connections between them (Grinnell, Williams, & Unrau, 2016, p.439). The role of qualitative data analysis in social work knowledge is to explore and understand complex behaviors, systems, and cultures (Huber & Miles). Qualitative data analysis involves three main phases, the first is how one will perform the analysis, defining the rules of analysis, and lastly identify meaning in common themes of study and create theories for future testing.
A common example of qualitative data analysis in social work is violence against women. In a qualitative context, researchers could perform and record one-on-one interviews with participants on video. This specific study could perform follow-up research to determine the incidents that occur with those that were referred after the classes were over (Rubin & Babbie, 2016, p. 520). Researchers could determine the views of how diabetics feel their understanding and scope of their disease is after taking a diabetes education class. A post test are administered to these individuals and could be tested against a group of diabetic individuals that did not join the education class for the control group.
