Qualities Of A Leader In Machiavelli's The Prince

In the novel The Prince by Machiavelli, Machiavelli depicts two types of leaders: those who are loved and those who are feared. Toward the end of the novel, Machiavelli explains how both are good qualities for a leader to have as long as they are balanced. Similar to 1916 when The Prince was written, those qualities could still be considered positive for a leader to have. Two of the greatest leaders of the 20th century include Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Both leaders played significant parts to the Allied victory in World War II, possibly because of them being loved or feared by other countries and people during the course of the war. The two leaders: FDR being the President of the United States and Winston Churchill being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom were faced with the dominating Hitler as his Nazis took over countries of Europe like a raging conflagration. The sapient leaders knew that if they wanted to win the war, they would have to be dour and inimical to scare the opponent. That’s just what they did to Hitler and his army during the war. A example of them doing this was when FDR and Churchill sent mass amount of forces to the beaches of Normandy in the D day invasion to overload Axis power and push their forces back. As this invasion worked for the Axis powers of Britain and the United States, other less successful countries tried to show a similar style of fear to scare Hitler's army in other situations. A example of this is the many other countries of Europe that were taken over by Hitler much earlier than when Britain was attempted. Many of the countries that were taken over most likely tried to resist against Hitler taking over but they didn’t strike enough fear with enough power to scare the
