Realism In The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead series is currently one of the most watched television series today. This television show displays what life would be like if a zombie apocalypse were to occur. However, this post-apocalyptic world can be understood through the basic practices of realism. Some of the best ways that realism is portrayed during this episode is through Rick Grimes hardcore personality, Eugene's conversation with Heathen, Rick's plan to contain the massive horde of zombies, Carter's discussion with other group members about Rick, and a discussion between Rick and Daryl about finding more people for Alexandria.

Early on, Diana is the leader of the group in Alexandria before Rick and his group ever arrive. When Rick arrives, conflict occurs between the two, due to opposite ideas on how to run the community. Diana is concerned about bringing the community together and finding more people so that they can grow, expand, and develop. She also believes in a “non-violent” society where alliances would be ideal. She is also a firm believer in peacemaking and giving people chances. On the other hand, Rick is a hardcore realist. Rick simply wants to be the hegemonic factor of the group. Rick understands the reality of world outside the gates of Alexandria and everything you do is about survival. He believes that you must take affirmative action in order to ensure safety and prosperity among the group. Another way that Rick is a realist is when he says, “I know this sounds insane, but this is an insane world.We have to come for them before they come for us, it's that simple” (Rick Grimes). These worlds are extremely realistic because realists have to act first in order to obtain the most power. They do not take chances with anything or anyone for the fear of losing power. Now, early on Eugene believed that he had the cure for the zombie outbreak. However, he ended up lying about the whole thing so that Rick and his group could take him to Washington, D.C (Alexandria is about 30 miles from DC). Meanwhile, everyone in the community still believes that if there is any hope in the world, it would be in DC. Prior to the conversation with Heathen, Eugene is guarding the gate to Alexandria when he notices that someone is standing on the other side. Little does he know that Heathen was part of the Alexandrian community and has been a hunt for supplies the last couple weeks.
