Procyonidae or Raccoons have existed for about 20.2 million years. For many years the red panda was considered a part of this family until genetics showed that they were in fact very different. They were also considered small bears but this was also proven false. Some of it's true family include Kinkajou,Western mountain coati. Raccoons are omnivorous they eat both meat and plants. They are known for washing their food to lower disease rates. One of their adaptations are small thumbs which can open doors and trash cans. While their thumbs are not aposable they are still very important to it's scavenging life still. Raccoons are known to be all over the world the only known subspecies that are singularly located is the crab eating raccoon.
