Reflection About Moving To America

In 2013, Hurricane Haiyan hit Tacloban, Philippines, my home city, with raging winds and record storm surges. Thousands of people died, neighbors went missing, and my cousins have never been the same. Two years later, I visited my family back home, and I could see Haiyan’s brutal lashes on the broken buildings and thousand-yard stares.

From my trip, I realized how incredibly lucky I am, living in America. I realized how fortunate I am that my parents worked tirelessly, scrimping and saving and studying, while raising my brother and I to move to America. I realized that if it wasn’t for their sacrifice, I might not even be here today.

This trip popped my cozy suburban bubble; I now understand that the rest of the world, the rest of my family even, don’t have the same advantages that I had deemed “normal”. I’ve been given many opportunities in life, and I seize every opportunity because I understand that I am a part of a fortunate minority.
