Reflection: Service Learning Experience In The Classroom

Reflecting on what you learned is one of the most important goals a student can learn while doing service learning experience. I expected to develop critical thinking skills that could expand my general knowledge of biology. It also made me think to myself that I might gain hands on experience when working on the material for the project, or interact with fourth graders. Additionally, I was expecting the elementary students to have some understanding of the general topic that my group was covering on the effects of music on plants. To my pleasant surprise, they did have a basic concept of the project and ask questions that were relatable to the project. Furthermore, my expectations were met, because the school children met my group criteria when it came to be involved in participation and staying alert during the personation.

My group project impact the school children by having them learn the root causes of how plants grow. They discover that plants can grow with music along with the main components of water and sunlight. These service activities taught me that many different students of different cultures reflect in more than one way such as they illustrate, affirm, extend, and challenge material presented in readings and lectures. This is particularly due to their background of culture, showing that students may learned differently, because of their upbringings. The most positive thing during my service learning project experience was how exciting the students wanted to take home our projects and plants. There was even a rumor going around among the children that one plant was called the dancing plant among their peers, to me this bought joy to my face, because students enjoy
