Chemical reactions are happening in every cell of the human body at every single moment. Many compounds are being formed and degraded because cells have a system of chemicals to regulate these chemical reactions. A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction is called a catalyst. A catalyst that is happening in a living organism is called an enzyme.

Enzymes are also one of the building blocks of life because without enzymes life on earth would not be possible. If enzymes didn’t exist the metabolic process of a cell would be too slow and you wouldn’t be able to digest food, eat, breath, etc. Enzymes are responsible for lowering a reactions activation energy and they are usually proteins although there can be RNA molecules that are like enzymes
