Religion is a Factor in Society – Fahrenheit 451 Essay Fahrenheit 451 had a religious society and the theme religion was shown constantly throughout the novel. Ray Bradbury (author of Fahrenheit 451) shows religion in the book with three literary devices. In the book Fahrenheit 451, religion is shown in the form of three literary devices allusion, metaphor and symbolism. First, Montag was trying to change society, by using knowledge which he accumulates from books (Bible). Beatty on the other hand had doubted him, that his knowledge will not be able to change society and how it functions in a daily routine. Beatty was telling Montag how he can not get anywhere with his knowledge towards society. Montag is feeling disbelief in himself, that he can not change how society thinks about books. “You think you can walk on water with your books.” (Bradbury 118) The theme religion was shown …show more content…
Granger was talking to Montag and had told him about the silly phoenix. The phoenix burns itself up and was reborn from its ash’s. This shows Montag being reborn from all his sins. “There was a silly damn bird called a phoenix back before Christ, every few hundred years he built a pyre and burned himself up.” (Bradbury 163) The theme religion was shown as symbolism. Granger talked to Montag about the silly damn bird before Christ and how it gets reborn. Granger was telling Montag this, to make him realize that he was the one who was reborn. Montag was reborn when he was done being a fireman. Montag was ready to change into a new person. Montag was reborn from the fire and this symbolises Jesus. In the bible it says and notifies, that the phoenix symbolises rebirth. Montag was shown as Jesus who was reborn from all his sins. Montag was shown as Jesus, who was reborn from all his ash’s due to what it says in the bible and how the phoenix symbolises
