Religious Hypocrisy In Tartuffe

In Moliére’s drama, Tartuffe, the idea of religious hypocrisy is mocked and exaggerated, in the relationship of Tartuffe and Organ. Tartuffe acts as a religious advisor to Organ, the head of the household and owner of the estate. Organ and his mother Madam Pernelle believe Tartuffe to be a man of holiness and zeal, but the rest of the members of the house know him as the hypocrite he is (Moliére 57). Organ seems to be more concerned with his precious Tartuffe than his own family. When he comes home from his two day escapade he is only concerned with how Tartuffe has been, disregarding his wife, Elmire’s, severe illness (Moliére 62-63). Organ makes very reckless decisions in order to please Tartuffe, such as, going against his promise to marry his daughter to Valère and tells her to take Tartuffe as her husband (Moliére 69). Organ is also blind to the fact that Tartuffe makes inappropriate passes at his wife, Elmire (Moliére 82-86). When Organs son, Damis, after listening to Tartuffe’s profound love confession to Elmire, tries to tell his father of Tartuffe's words and actions, Organ disinherits Damis as he believes he is just trying to stain Tartuffe's good name (Moliére 87). Organ is to go as far as decide to make Tartuffe his sole heir of all his estate (Moliére 90). When Elmire hears of how far her husband has gone and all the things he starts to promise Tartuffe, she is stuck to make a decision (Moliére 94). Elmire could set aside her moral standing, by tolerating Tartuffe and her daughter’s marriage, disregarding his inappropriate advances towards her, and allowing him to control her husbands every decision, but instead she chose to reduce herself to flattering Tartuffe by giving into his desires before the eyes of her husband in order to expose him as a
